Northumberland Day is launching a major new initiative for 2020, which will both increase parish participation and awareness of Northumberland Day, but also help them make the most of the benefits that the county day celebration can bring to parishes.
“We Love Parishes in the Springtime” utilises the Rather Big Northumberland Day Flag that was first unveiled at Seahouses in May 2019. This year, the flag made a few appearances, but the plan for 2020 is for it to travel from parish to parish, being handed over in the most innovative way possible, so an interesting story and picture can be created.
The first parish will be one that registers as a participant in time to potentially be the one that can take charge of the flag at the Northumberland Day ‘Northumbie Awards 2019’, to be held on the evening of August 28 2019, at the White Swan Hotel in Alnwick.
The initiative will then start in spring 2020, once the route of participating parishes has been mapped out, so that the final parish receives the flag in the run up to Northumberland Day 2020, which will be on Sunday May 24, 2020.
The organiser of Northumberland Day, Jane Hunt, says: “This is just one of the exciting things happening in 2020 and we hope that parishes will throw themselves into this, as grassroots support for Northumberland Day is its lifeblood.”
